Master description

The Master's Degree in Pathogenesis and Treatment of Aids comprises 60 compulsory credits and is structured in seven modules to be covered in one academic year: five content-based modules, with the fifth also including a period spent in a research centre in the USA, a sixth module devoted to a work placement and the seventh one for the master's dissertation.

The group of theory-based credits are intended to provide a broad view of current developments in human retrovirology, with a special focus on HIV. In line with the above, module 1 examines the cellular and molecular bases of HIV-1 infections and associated pathogenesis, modules 2, 3 and 4 deal with more specific topics like antiretroviral treatment, other viruses and pathogens associated with VIH and the VIH vaccine, and module 5 examines the main research areas of the leading HIV research centres around the world and provides basic concepts on the management of several aspects directly related to research activities.

The students will carry out a work placement of around 300 hours. The main objective of this compulsory placement is to make further progress in the application of research methods covered in previous modules. In module 7, the students write and subsequently defend a master's dissertation, which is designed to pull together the contents studied in the previous modules.
