Bachelor's Degree in Speech Therapy
The Bachelor's Degree in Speech Therapy aims to prepare students for a professional future in this field by helping them acquire both the scientific foundations of the profession and the ethical standards needed to serve the public. Speech Therapy is focused on the assessment, diagnostic and treatment of disorders related to speech, voice and non-verbal oral functions such as swallowing, as well as oral and written languages and other forms of communication in children and adults. The functions of a speech therapist include the planning and carrying out of preventive interventions with the aim to reduce the incidence of these disorders and improve verbal and communication skills in healthy people.
The Faculty of Psychology of the UAB attaches great importance to practice activities carried out by students. It pioneered the inclusion of Practicum subjects on the syllabus, in view of the fact that most speech therapists work in an applied context. The faculty also has an extended infrastructure of teaching laboratories, computer rooms and departmental areas that favour innovative teaching based on practice.
Together with the teaching staff of the departments of the Faculty of Psychology, lecturers from other departments and faculties (Medicine, Philosophy and Arts, and Education) also give classes in this degree. This variety of lecturers offers an added value to the degree by complementing speech therapy with expert knowledge in other fields. In addition, it enables students to have access to the facilities and specific teaching materials for each subject.
The Bachelor's Degree in Speech Therapy comprises five blocks: scientific bases of speech therapy; communication, language, speech, audition, voice disorders and other non-verbal oral functions; speech therapy assessment techniques and tools; designing, planning and applying speech therapy interventions and developing professional skills. The syllabus includes a set of subjects that will allow students to gain more in-depth scientific knowledge related to this field as well as to learn about speech therapy interventions in education, neurology, otorhinolaryngology, etc.
