Presentation

The Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Biology provides basic training in the relationship between biological systems, in all their complexity and diversity, and the natural environment. Almost all aspects of human activity are conditioned by the need to minimise the impact they have on the natural environment. In order to do this, it is necessary to have adequate knowledge of how organisms, populations and communities respond to the environment, as well as their ability to transform it. This knowledge requires the analysis of spatial variability and dynamics over time of biological systems, often with regard to species. The degree also gives training in the application of this knowledge to dealing with conservation and management issues.

Among world universities already offering a similar degree are the University of Reading (United Kingdom) University College of London (UK), University of Nottingham (UK), University of Roskilde (Denmark), Davis University (USA) and University of Guelph (Canada).

The environmental crisis has created a demand for professionals committed to the conservation of biodiversity and to identifying and passing on the potential benefits of biodiversity to society. To achieve this it is necessary to train up professionals who can identify and interpret the origin and function of biological diversity in organisms, species and ecosystems, and can analyse the processes that govern the interaction between living beings and the physical and biological environment. These professionals will be working in areas like the study and management of natural resources, conservation and management of flora, fauna and ecosystems, and biological pest control. Employment opportunities lie mainly in public administration, education, environmental services, science popularisation, farming and forestry.

Student Profile

The degree is aimed at people interested in the field of environmental services, basic management and research, and industries related to biology and the environment.
It is highly recommendable to have a good level in Biology and to have taken mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in upper secondary school. We also recommend that students should have a good level of English.

Career options

Studies in environmental biology are widely recognised in many universities around the world where students are trained to become professionals capable of identifying and interpreting the origins and functions of biological diversity and of analysing how living beings interact with their environment .
Career opportunities can be found in the following fields:

  • Analysing and solving problems stemming from impacts on biodiversity and conservation, acting as specialists, managers, auditors or consultants in companies, project offices, protected natural spaces, museums, etc.
  • Experts in document management, information and education on the natural environment, working as guides and monitors in natural parks, museums and protected areas, or as scientific consultants, communicators, photographers, in publishers' the media, foundations, etc.
  • Researchers into biodiversity, biological processes and the functioning of ecosystems, able to work for public and private research organisations.
  • Professionals specialising in the protection of cultivated plants, fungi and animals based on biological control and in those fields which represent a search for new resources based on natural biodiversity.
  • Lecturers at different educational levels.
