IEEC Weekly Colloquium: "Recent Developments in Black Hole Physics and Astrophysics"

Diffusion, Research - ICE (Can Magrans, s/n · Campus de la UAB)

Description:

Our understanding of space and time is probed to its depths by black holes. These most fascinating objects of modern astrophysics, which appear as a natural consequence of general relativity, provide a powerful tool able to examine macroscopic and microscopic properties of the universe. I shall recall the basic concepts of black hole's theory, including unsolved issues such as the information paradox, the holographic hypothesis and the fundamental role played by quantum black holes in the construction of quantum gravity theories. Then I?ll summarize the direct and indirect observational signatures of black holes, emphasizing on the recent detection of gravitational waves and the future prospects of high-angular resolution telescopes to catch the silhouette of the Galactic massive black hole.
