International rankings

UAB holds a leading position in the most prestigious and influent international university rankings. In recent years, this award has been favored by the growing impact of the research, the constant improvement of the quality of teaching and the ability to attract international talent. This progress has been decisive in going forward to leading positions among Spanish universities in the two main university rankings: the QS World University Ranking and the Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) - Shanghai Ranking

The UAB is listed in the 201-300 ranking for the best universities in the world in the classification carried out by Jiao Tong University of Shanghai (ARWU 2013). In its ranking of Spanish universities, the UAB classifies third.

QS World University Rankings

The UAB is the first-ranked university in Spain according to the QS Ranking 2013/2014. The UAB is located at position 177 in the world ranking (and 79 in Europe). Together with UB am UAM are the only Spanish universities in the top 200.

As regards academic ambits, the UAB is in the top 100 worldwide in the field of Social sciences (100).


QS top 50 under 50 Ranking 2013/2014
According to this ranking based on QS-WUR 2013-2014 data, which includes universities founded less than 50 years ago, the UAB ranks 9th in the world ranking, 2nd at European level, and is the first-ranked Spanish university.
 

THE World University Rankings

In the 2013 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the UAB is one of the three best Spanish universities, with a position between 226 and 250 in the World Ranking. In Europe, the UAB ranks among the Top 100 (between 85 and 99).

Ranking THE Top 100 under 50 2014
Times Higher Education has published the second edition of this ranking that includes the top 100 universities founded within the last 50 years. To produce this list, THE changed certain indicators in their overall ranking, lowering the weighting of prestige surveys in teaching and research. In this ranking, the UAB is listed as 23rd in the world, 13th in Europe and 2nd in Spain.

SCImago Institutions Rankings Group

In the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2013, the UAB has advanced to position 202 in the number of publications produced worldwide (171 including only universities). At the Spanish level, the UAB has improved  its position in terms of publications (second-ranked in Spain) and for the index of standardized impact (third-ranked).

The rankings of the SCImago research group, a group comprising specialists from a number of universities and the CSIC in Spain, analyses the academic activity of higher-education and research institutions based on the Scopus database of the Elsevier Group


Scimago algo publishes SIR Iberoamericano, a report considering only iberoamerican institucions. In 2014 edition, UAB ranks 8th of Ibeamerican universities in total number of publications, and 2nd in Spain.

In 2012, Scimago has also published
Science Indicators in Spanish HEIs 2006-2010.

According to this report, the UAB ranks second among Spanish universities in total number of publications (Total Output) and in display of excellence (Exc), improving the results for SIR 2011 for almost all indicators.

CHE-Excellence Ranking

In the 2010 CHE Excellence Ranking edition, the UAB enhanced its presence and is distinguished as "excellent" in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Economics, ranking as the second Spanish university for number of excellence hallmarks (4 of 7).

  

The Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE), an independent body created by the German Rectors' Conference, publishes the CHE Excellence Ranking 2010, a ranking of the best European universities in which to carry out postgraduate study (MA and PhD level) in Biology, Political Science, Economics, Physics, Mathematics, Psychology and Chemistry. 

The Spanish University Research-Activities Observatory (IUNE)

The UAB is the first Spanish university in the co-authorship index (the indicator of collective work versus individual work in publications). The Observatory ranks the UAB in second place for the average of citations and papers written by academic staff; it is ranked as the third university in Spain in number of publications in 3 leading journals for each field of specialization.

The Spanish University Research-Activities Observatory (IUNE) is a tool with which to understand and analyse R+D+i in public and private universities. It is an initiative coordinated by the UC3M Laboratory on Metric Information Studies carried out within the framework of the Alliance 4 Universities (A4U), including the UAB, the UPF and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. The IUNE presents the most significant results in the scientific and innovative activity of 73 Spanish universities (48 public and 25 private).

The ISI Ranking of Spanish universities 2013

The UAB ranks among the top 3 universities in Spain in 6 out of 12 scientific fields analysed by the ISI Ranking of Spanish Universities.  The UAB ranks in second place in four ambits (Earth Sciences and the Environment, Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Medicine). 

The ISI Ranking of Spanish universities
is based on research published in journals of highest impact and visibility, and is developed jointly by research groups at the universities of Granada and Navarre.  

Ranking of research production and productivity in Spanish public universities

The Psicothema journal has published the 2012 edition of this ranking, produced by a research group from the University of Granada. This evaluates seven research criteria, creating two rankings: one reflecting volume (production); the other based on productivity (volume weighted by teaching and research staff).
 
The UAB ranks in 3rd position in terms of size of research criteria, and 3rd in terms of productivity classification.

The CSIC Cybermetrics Lab

The UAB's Digital Deposit of Documents (DDD)is first in the ranking of repositories in Spain, according to the latest edition of the Ranking Web of World Repositories produced by the CSIC's Cybermetrics Laboratory.

Web indicators used in the January 2012 edition measured the visibility and impact of academic repositories in 1,200 institutions around the world. Three Spanish repositories rank in the first 50: the DDD occupies position 11, UPCommons occupies position 17, and Digital CSIC is 24th on the list.
