Information platform created for patients undergoing cancer treatments
University of Patients 14.06.2012 Popularization  -  UAB's Josep Laporte Foundation has created the Cuidarse project, which offers useful recommendations for people dealing with the effects caused by common cancer treatments.

This initiative is part of the "Universitat dels Pacients", a project developed by the Josep Laporte Foundation, and is sponsored by the biotechnology firm AMGEN.

Cuidarse offers tips on how to improve the quality of life of cancer patients, tips for both patients and carers. The information, which includes a series of short videos, can be found at the web www.cuidarse.org.es.

Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery are the options most commonly available in the treatment of cancer. All three represent consequences for the patient, both at physical and emotional levels. Chemotherapy, for example, can provoke nausea and vomiting, the loss of hair and risk of infections.

That is why Cuidarse wishes to help those affected and their families learn how to better cope with the effects of cancer treatments and to take better care of themselves in general. The platform offers information on which foods are the most adequate, what patients can do to look better and to what extent they can exercise, while also touching upon psychological, emotional and even professional aspects which may be affected by the treatment.

The Cuidarse project includes an assessment committee formed by cancer professionals and patients. It has also been recommended by several scientific societies and cancer patients associations.
