Climate change: effects on the Arctic
Scientists led by the German Alfred Wegener Institute, among them two ICTA-UAB PhD students, have shown for the first time that global warming is causing alterations to the whole ecosystem of the Arctic, from surface to depth, more quickly than previously thought.

3 Questions: Jean-Marie Lehn
Jean-Marie Lehn was awarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987 for his research on molecular recognition. Lehn studied how two molecules interact to form a union with different properties from the original, becoming one of the fathers of supramolecular chemistry.

Sixto Malato holds a PhD in Chemical Sciences and is in charge of the Unit for Solar Treatment of Water and directs CIESOL, a centre affiliated to the University of Almeria and CIEMAT. He has participated in over thirty local and European projects related to the use of solar energy and the development of photoreactors for water treatments.

Electronic Sommeliers
Researchers from the Group of Sensors and Biosensors at UAB have designed an electronic tongue which can identify different types of cava wines. Thanks to a combination of chemical measurement systems and advanced mathematical procedures, the system is designed to imitate the human sense of taste.

An artificial ecosystem in space
MELiSSA, an initiative by the European Space Agency, seeks to create a sustainable artificial ecosystem able to function under low gravity conditions such as those found on the surface of Mars or the Moon. At the School of Engineering of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona a pilot plant has been designed to assess the viability of the MELiSSA project.
