| Recent history shows that technology and knowledge are important factors for economic growth and development. Since the creation of the first mechanism to protect inventions in the fifteenth century, the patent system has evolved with the aim to promote innovation and encourage economic development. Offering exclusive rights for a limited period, an inventor can recover expenditure on R & D investment. It also encourages investment in new inventions so these are marketed and the general public benefit from the fruits of this innovation. In addition, the system is designed to disseminate knowledge and information to the public through the publication of patent applications and granted patents.
