Over 220 expert researchers in nanomedicine took part in the first Nanomedicine Workshop, organised by the UAB-CIE project and held at the UAB Hotel Campus.
Manel López Béjar, Vice Rector for Research at UAB; Lluís Tort, coordinator of the UAB Biocluster; and Antonio Villaverde, scientific coordinator of the Workshop, opened the session by highlighting the potential in nanomedicine at UAB, working together with the research centres and institutes belonging to affiliated hospitals. ?In biomedicine, this framework represents 50% of all biomedical activity conducted in Catalonia?, Lluís Tort declared. For Antonio Villaverde, the workshop represented ?an opportunity for scientists, institutions and businesses to interact?. All three researchers coincided in saying that the workshop was a starting point for future editions which will be organised.
The objective of the workshop was to communicate strategic opportunities present in this field and to promote research and innovation in nanomedicine among researchers of different UAB-CIE project members.
Patrick Boisseau, representative of the European Technology Platform on Nanomedicine, spoke of the large number of European calls to fund projects related to nanomedicine, and presented his platform's plan of action, highlighting that towards "the horizon of 2020, all European organisations in this field must be coordinated to set up a nanomedicine community".
The event, organised into five sessions focusing on strategies and opportunities in the field of nanomedicine, from Europe to Catalonia, included the participation of Rogerio Gaspar, researcher at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon and at the iMed.UL research centre; Josep Samitier, coordinator of the Spanish Platform on Nanomedicine and researcher at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia; Joan-Albert Vericat, from the Noscira biopharmaceutical firm; Dr Simó Schwartz, from the Research Centre in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for Nanomedicine (CIBBIM-Nanomedicine) of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute.
