Financial aids, grants and calls

To provide suitable resources and strategies to those who are writing a PhD thesis in Catalan or English at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and ensure the linguistic quality of the final text.
 

The total allocation for this period is €20,000.

For type A (Catalan)
All PhD students of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona may apply for this support.
Once presented, the theses that have received this support must be added to the digital cooperative repository of doctoral theses (TdX), managed by the Consortium of University Libraries of Catalonia (CBUC) and the Supercomputing Centre of Catalonia (CESCA).

For type B (English)
This support is available to all PhD students at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona who have a command of English equivalent to at least level five of the Language Service (Servei de Llengües), level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Once presented, the theses that have received this support must be added to the digital cooperative repository of doctoral theses (TdX), managed by the Consortium of University Libraries of Catalonia (CBUC) and the Supercomputing Centre of Catalonia (CESCA).

If available funds are insufficient to satisfy all the demand, the resolution will be based on the order of arrival of the applications. However, the funds may be divided between semesters in order to ensure their availability throughout the year.
Also, at least 30% of the total allocation will be reserved for theses in Catalan and another 30% for those in English, provided that there are enough applications to reach these minimums

Methodology
Support is given to linguistic and textual aspects of the writing process, by means of the following:
An initial general introductory session in groups of no more than five persons. Three individual tutorials to analyse and rework a fragment of the thesis so as to detect areas for improvement and offer personalised advice. A consultation service available throughout the writing process.

Session contents
Formal aspects of the text and correction of the language. Resources to help with queries about language use. Frequent errors of written expression, morphology, vocabulary use and syntax. The formal language used for academic production.
If the available funding proves to be insufficient to cover all the applications received, the service offered may be adjusted accordingly.

There are two types of support:
A. Support for writing a PhD thesis in Catalan.
B. Support for writing a PhD thesis in English.
A PhD thesis in Catalan is understood to be one which falls into one of the following categories:
a) Theses written entirely in Catalan.
b) Theses for PhDs with a European doctoral research component, and which are written in Catalan and another language of the European Union.
c) Theses in the form of a compendium of publications in which the parts or chapters that are not publications are written in Catalan.
A PhD thesis in English is understood to be one which falls into one of the following categories:
a) Theses written entirely in English.
b) Theses for obtaining PhDs with a European doctoral research component, and which are written in English and another language of the European Union.
c) Theses in the form of a compendium of publications in which the parts or chapters that are not publications are written in English.

This support is incompatible with any other support or grant provided for the same purpose.

Those interested in applying for support should provide the following documents:

- The application form.
- A certificate of having registered their thesis.

The decision-making body for this process will be the Language Service, by delegation of the Language Policy Commission, which is informed annually of the resolutions made.
